Since one month, I’m using MyHeritage.de as platform for my personal family research. I selected MyHeritage because of the apparent size of 100 million users worldwide, not knowing the part of paid usage. Now they sent me a mail over Trustpilot for an invited review, which in short describes a mixed experience with MyHeritage. Let’s see if they accept this short review.
Mixed experience with MyHeritage
Contact to and work with family trees with related topics is easy. My tree is fast-growing. But the main reason is material from other sources. Personal work from relatives, friends, enthusiastic people outside MyHeritage and databases like Gedbas, Arcinsys or Matricula are very helpful. Many matches within MyHeritage are not useful, like spam, sorry. So my impression of MyHeritage is mixed. It is definitively no professional tool. User management is missing. It is more social media in genealogy. The user interface has to be improved, it is not straightforward. You can see different phases of software development. Reclaimed 100 million users worldwide and paid usage should provide a better interface. My plan is to leave MyHeritage after data collection. I’m testing webtrees als personal webserver.
I could have added that the software support during data import is not convincing. There is no simple way to check the validity of the gathered data. I’m missing segmentation of data groups which belong together. Now there are 350 persons in my growing family tree, and it is difficult to maintain an overview. It would be nice to define to-do-lists for data improvement. Why are there no assistants for repetitive procedures?
My opinion: I think MyHeritage is designed for lay people to provide fast results, and to present the proclaimed results in a presentable form. But no professional tool. So my experiene with MyHeritage is mixed.
